What is Median Gross Rent?

The median monthly rent including utilities (electricity, gas, water, sewer) for renter-occupied housing units. This represents the total housing cost for renters.

Rent affordability is a growing concern nationwide. The general guideline is that housing should cost no more than 30% of household income — counties exceeding this threshold are considered cost-burdened.

The highest median gross rent is found in California, CA at $2,036, followed by Hawaii, HI ($1,971) and District of Columbia, DC ($1,954). The median county value is $1,228. At the other end, North Dakota, ND has the lowest value at $954.
