Number of deaths caused by assault (homicide) per 100,000 population. This includes all methods of homicide — firearms, stabbing, blunt force, and others.
Homicide rates vary dramatically across U.S. counties, with urban areas and communities experiencing concentrated poverty generally having higher rates. Firearms are involved in approximately 75% of U.S. homicides.
Key Findings
The lowest homicide rate is found in Morris County, NJ at 0.7, followed by Saratoga County, NY (0.7) and Rockingham County, NH (0.8). The median county value is 6.1. At the other end, Lowndes County, AL has the highest value at 46.0.
